The Will of Colonel Joseph Daffin
ca. 1745/55 - June 21, 1796.

    In the Name of God Amen I, Joseph Daffin of Dorchester County and State of Maryland being of perfect health of body and of sound and  disposing mind and memory do make this my last will and testament in manner and form following that is to say. 

     First I give and devise unto my nephew Joseph Daffin my  dwelling plantation part of North Yarmouth agreeably to the present Division as in my immediate possession to him and his heirs in fee simple. 

    Item I give and devise unto my nephew  Charles Daffin part of two Tracts of Land called Hoopers Chance and Hoopers Fortune containing as pr. deed 112 Acres, likewise a Tract of Land adjoining the two above mentioned called Ennals Outlet, also a Tract of Land called Elinors Meadows .

    Item I give and devise unto Susannah Hellen her Life Estate in all my lands in Saint Maryâs County  purchased of John Allen Thomas, the reversion there of I give to my nephew Charles Daffin to him and to his heirs in fee Simple. 
 
 
 

 


 
 
 
 
 

 
 
 
 

    Item I give and devise unto my  niece Susannah Daffin the House and lot in Cambridge purchased of Doctor Daniel Sullivane (an illegible word or abreviation follows the name Sullivane. It could also be a surname) and to her heirs in fee simple.

    Item I give and devise unto Joseph Ennalls Muse, Thomas Daffin, Charles Daffin and Susannah Daffin all my right and title to the reversion of all the Lands now  in the possession of  Mrs. Elizabeth Greenberry Ennalls to be equally divided between them and to their Heirs forever .

    Item I give and devise unto William Piercy part of a Tract of Land called Taylors Chance on which Fisher Mears now lives containing p deed 265 acres but by measurement 300 acres to him and his Wife for their Lives, and the Reversion thereof  to Charles Daffin and his heirs in fee simple.
 

    And I do hereby  revoke and annull the above mentioned Devises to my nephews Joseph Daffin and Charles Daffin and my niece Susannah Daffin provided they should claim any part of the real or landed Estate descended from their Father Charles Daffin, and I give the above said mentioned devised Land in that Case to my  nephew Thomas Daffin whom  I wish to enjoy his fathers Estate and to his heirs in fee simple-
 
 
 
 

 


 
 
 
 

 
 
 
 
 
 

    Item I give and bequeath Negro Cuff to the devil and himself as liberated from me and my heirs forever. 

    Item I give and bequeath Negro Stephen to the Prince of Darkness and himself as liberated from me and my Heirs forever with three pounds a year for his travelling expenses in the Plutonian Regions to be paid out of my Estate during his life-

     Item I give and bequeath Negro Jack the elder to the celebrated Knight of La Mancha and Himself as liberated from me and my heirs forever- 

    Item I give and bequeath Negro Ben to the Goddess Runcina(?) and himself as liberated from me and my Heirs forever. 

    Item I give and bequeath unto Negro Robin a faithful Servant his freedom. 

    Item I give and bequeath unto Negro Pompey a faithful Servant his Freedom. 

    Item I give and bequeath unto Negro Charles his freedom. 

    Item I give and bequeath unto black Rose yellow Rose and Salvina their Freedom and three pounds per annum to each of them for life to be pd. Yearly out of my Estate. 

    I give and bequeath unto Mrs. Anne Muse my Chariot and Harness- .
 
 

 


 
 
 
 
 

 
 

    I give and bequeath all the remainder of my Negroes unto Joseph Ennalls Muse, Charles Daffin, Joseph Daffin and Susannah Daffin to be equally divided between them and their Heirs in such manner as to keep the Families as nearly connected as possible. Subject to the division and directions of my Executor as they  severally become of age he accounting to the Legatees for the profits arising from said Negroes

     I give and bequeath unto Joseph Daffin all my plate China, pictures,  Bookcase and Books, the Bureau, and two Card Tables, and all the rest of my personal Estate of every Description,  it is my  will and desire should be sold and after paying off my just debts,  funeral charges, and the Legatees above and herein after mentioned the Residue of the monies arising from the Sales to be equally Divided among my Nephews Thomas Daffin, Charles Daffin, Joseph Daffin and my niece Susannah Daffin and as there has not been a final settlement and Receipts passed for the Estate of Colonel John Ennalls on which I administered although paid off it is my will and desire that provided any one of the Representatives of  Colonel John Ennalls taking advantage of the want of Receipts should call on my Executor on this Business, that the devises to Joseph Ennalls Muse here mentioned should all be null and void as to him and his heirs and the said property willed him to be equally divided between my Nephews and Niece here to fore mentioned and their Heirs forever.
 
 
 
 

 

 


 

 
 
 
 

    Lastly  I constitute and appoint John Craig my sole Executor to this my last will and Testament hereby revoking and annulling any former will or wills ratifying and confirming this and only this to be my last Will and Testament and for his Services and attention as Executor I give and bequeath him Two hundred and fifty pounds. In Testimony where of I have here unto set my Hand and affixed my seal this thirtieth Day of May 1795-

Dorchester County _  On the 27th Day of June Anno Dommi 1796 John Craig the appointed Executor made Oath on the Holy Evangels of Almighty God that the aforegoing instrument of writing is the true and whole will and Testament of Joseph Daffin late of Dorchester County Deceased that hath come to his hands or possession and that he doth not know of any other-

of Dorchester County _  On the 27th day of June Anno Dommi 1796 Henry Waggaman and John Hooper two of the Subscribing Witnesses to the aforegoing last Will and Testament of Joseph Daffin late of Dorchester county Deceased severally  made Oath on the Holy Evangalist of Almighty God that they did see the Testator Therein named sign and seal this will and that they heard him publish pronounce and declare the same to be his last will and testament that at the time of his so doing he was to the best of their apprehension of sound and disposng mind,  memory and understanding and that they together with Roger Woolford the other witness respectively subscribed their names as witnesses to this will in the presense and at the request of the Testator and in the presence of each other.
