Letter
No. 35 This is a letter sent to Joseph Daffin in 1776
from the Council of Safety, Annapolis giving him instruction in the recruitment
of soldiers from the Eastern Shore to fight against the British
Thomas
Sparrow's Memorial This is a letter sent
from Mr. Thomas Sparrow to the Council of Safety on Jan. 5, 1777 describing
his ordeal on the Eastern Shore in recruiting soldiers to fight the King.
The idea of a revolution was not a very popular idea on the Eastern Shore
as Britain was their protection against attacks from Spain, who were trying
to colonize farther north from Florida and France who were starting to
move eastward from the Great Lakes region. Many were fearful of the idea
of being independent of Britain and fending for themselves. This is an
interesting account of what Mr. Sparrow went through and he mentions the
help he received from then Capt. Joseph Daffin and others. He also names
Tories who tried to harm him or disuade his recruitment.
