Steel furnaces
(Detail of Oughtibridge's view,
c. 1737)

The pair of bottle-shaped cementation furnaces on
Steelhouse Lane, at the northwestern edge of the town, were erected by
Samuel Shore. Thomas Parkin's steel furnace was out of sight in Blind Lane.
Shore and Parkin were the only men to be making steel within the town of
Sheffield at this time.
